My parents didn't have an athletic or healthy lifestyle so I had to find my own way.
They wanted to work their butts off and have a huge amount of money, and they wanted me to run with a basketball team and have my picture in a newspaper and all that. I just wanted to be a kid who had a normal life and just do my jump roping in the backyard.
I didn't have the energy or the health to run. I remember I was in the gym and I'd made a change in my routine because my body wasn't feeling the way I thought it was feeling about running that day. So I walked in, and I was tired because I had had an 8-hour day and I didn't get any sleep. I felt like I was walking on clouds. I felt like I had something to say and I wanted to tell everyone about it.

And I remember my dad looking at me and saying, "Honey, your mother wants you to run more." And, you know, he said that the first time because my mother used to make me run every morning. And I thought he was just being kind. But then I realized that the way she looked at me was to be helpful and support me on my way to become a master jump roper.
